Sector barometer and public monitor

Research period: 2022-2023

The research centre keeps track of what is going on in the broad event sector in Belgium, both on the supply side (sector barometer) and the demand side (audience monitor). A look back is linked to a look forward in every survey. Future expectations and confidence are charted with the aim of better matching supply and demand.

 

The professional surveyed

Some remarkable research results (Januari 2023):

 

  • 46% of the organisers and suppliers in Belgium estimate that the total turnover of their organisation will be higher in 2023 than in 2022.

  • 47% of the (local) authorities indicate that the total budgets in their organisation for organising and supporting events will remain about the same in 2023 as the budgets in 2022.

  • 81% of the event professionals fear that rising energy prices will determine their organisation's activities in 2023.

  • 80% worry about the impact of rising purchase prices.

  • Worries about rising personnel costs keep 74% of the professionals in our country awake.

  • 62% fear that finding good personnel will have a negative impact on their operations.

  • 16% say that the number of staff has decreased in their organisation over the past year. For 25%, that number increased.

  • Working with permanent freelancers also experienced a decrease in more than 15% of the organisations. In 28%, there is an increase.

  • With an average score of 7.5 out of 10, event professionals express confidence in a positive future for the organisation or service in which they work.

  • With an average score of 8 out of 10, these professionals express confidence in a positive future for themselves within this organisation.

The event visitor surveyed

Some remarkable research results (December 2022):

  • 79% of the Belgians visited events in their free time in 2022, which is 8% more than in 2019.

  • 29% of the Belgians like to plan their trip in advance.

  • 22% of the Belgians prefer to go to events with others they know well.

  • For 80% of the visitors, events where tasting and consuming are central, such as a fair or food truck festival, were particularly popular.

  • 45% of the visitors go to events less often than before the corona crisis.

  • 37% of the visitors order their tickets for events less in advance than before the corona crisis.

  • 52% of the visitors are concerned about their safety at events.

  • 66% of the visitors want organisers to make efforts to reduce the environmental and climate impact.

  • 77% of the visitors want organisers to take measures against undesirable behaviour at events.

  • With an average score of 6.3 out of 10, Belgians express confidence in a positive future for themselves in the coming year.
